VLADIVOSTOK, January 12 (RIA Novosti) - Three light to moderate earthquakes have been registered over the past 24 hours in Russia's Far East, and experts warn that there may soon be a strong quake in a region, local emergency services said Friday.

The tremors, measuring between 4.5 and 5.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, struck the Koryak Autonomous Area in the north of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Experts said the aftershocks could cause a much stronger earthquake, with Richter magnitude of more than six.

On April 21 2006, a 7.8-magnitude quake in the Koryak Autonomous Area, the most powerful since 1900, injured 31 people. It also damaged about 380 houses and 25 administrative facilities in several towns.

Another earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale was registered early Friday in the south of Russia's Kuril island chain in the Pacific, to the south of Kamchatka.

Last November an 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck 75 kilometers southeast of Simushir Island, raising fears of an imminent tsunami. A total of 358 earthquakes have been registered in the Kuril Islands area since November 15.

During 2006, more than 1,200 people, including 542 children, were evacuated from northern Kamchatka following a series of earthquakes.
