Two Turkish migrant workers killed in eastern Russia

MOSCOW, February 24 (RIA Novosti) - Two Turkish citizens have been stabbed to death in the regional center of Samara on the Volga River, a local police source said Saturday.

"The bodies of two Turkish citizens with multiple knife wounds have been found in a rented apartment," the source said, adding that both men worked in a local cafe as cooks.

Police have launched an investigation into the murder.

Russian and foreign human rights groups have raised concerns over growing xenophobic sentiments in the country in recent years. Assaults on dark-skinned people, including fatal attacks on foreign students, and acts of vandalism in synagogues, have become widespread across the country, as have nationalist rallies.

The trend prompted the Russian president to order enhanced measures to protect Russian citizens against exposure to extremism, nationalism, and religious intolerance when he outlined objectives for the Federal Security Service (FSB) in late January, which also included steps to curb economic crimes.

Russia's interior minister said on February 9 that police solved 169 race-hate crimes last year, 27% more than in 2005.
