MOSCOW, February 25 (RIA Novosti) - Methane gas explosion is to blame for a Siberia coal mine rock collapse that killed one person, the regional governor said Sunday.

The rock collapsed at 11:45 a.m. local time (4:45 a.m. GMT) Sunday at the Dzerzhinsky mine in the city of Prokopyevsk in the Kemerovo Region in southwestern Siberia.

"At the moment of the explosion, there were nine miners in that section. Overall, there were 220 persons under the ground," Aman Tuleyev said in an interview with Vesti-24 round-the-clock TV channel.

According to Tuleyev, the rescue operation had ended by 4:00 p.m. local time (9:00 a.m. GMT). One miner died, two persons received light injuries and four miners suffered from burns and gas poisoning. All the other miners were brought to the surface, the governor said.

The family of the dead miner will receive no less than 1 million rubles (about $38,000) in compensation, the governor said.

The coal mine has been closed until the cause of the gas explosion is established, the governor said.
