MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti) - Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov is currently being questioned in the ongoing investigation into Andrei Vavilov, the Prosecutor General's Office said Monday.

Prosecutors have accused Vavilov, 46, and a number of others of being part of a criminal group, which allegedly in 1997 embezzled $231 million in a deal on MiG fighter deliveries to India.

"We confirm that Mikhail Kasyanov has been summoned to the Prosecutor General's Office," a PGO spokesman said.

Tatyana Razbash, Kasyanov press secretary, said the former PM arrived at the PGO at 11:00 a.m. Moscow time [8 a.m. GMT] for questioning in the investigation into Andrei Vavilov's case.

On January 10, the Supreme Court ruled that Vavilov's actions could be classified as criminal and consented to his prosecution for the first time. Vavilov's lawyers appealed the decision and on February 13, the Supreme Court upheld charges of fraud and abuse of office against Vavilov.

A controversial oil magnate, Vavilov was the first deputy finance minister 1994-97 under former President Boris Yeltsin, and controlled the funds allocated for Yeltsin's second presidential campaign in 1996. Vavilov was also one of the architects of the Russian stock market and formerly owned the Severnaya Neft oil company. He currently represents the Penza Region of European Russia in the upper house of parliament
