Russia may impose complete ban on rice imports from India

MOSCOW, February 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's animal and plant health watchdog said Tuesday it may impose a complete ban on Indian rice imports from May 1, if India fails to comply with food safety requirements.

In mid-February, Rosselkhoznadzor seized several batches of Indian rice, after finding they contained a banned pesticide, oil product contaminants and high levels of an insecticide.

Rosselkhoznadzor has proposed that the Indian side provide Russia with documentation on India's rice exports, including the use of pesticides, the dosage, and the date the rice was treated.

"If India fails to comply with this requirement, Rosselkhoznadzor will impose restrictive measures (up to a complete ban on rice imports from India) from May 1, until measures are taken to guarantee the compliance with Russian food safety standards of rice exported to Russia," the watchdog's press office said.
