MOSCOW, April 7 (RIA Novosti) - More than 40 cars have been involved in a major pileup on one of Russia's main highways near Moscow, but no casualties have been reported, traffic police said Saturday.
The road crash occurred on a 5-kilometer stretch of the Moscow-Riga Highway at about 10.30 Moscow time (6.30 GMT) near the 35th kilometer (20th mile) marker.
Police said the crash had been caused by heavy snowfall that created slippery conditions on the road.
"There were no casualties because cars were moving at slow speed due to bad weather," a traffic police source said.
Weather conditions in Moscow and the Moscow Region have seriously deteriorated in the last few days with a cold spell bringing heavy show and gusty winds to the area.
