Russian MP Zatulin to sue Ukraine in Strasbourg for entry ban

MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - Senior Russian MP Konstantin Zatulin said Tuesday he will sue Ukraine in the European Court for refusing to allow him entry to the country.

"The courts are being pressured here. We can see that the legal system in Ukraine is in the same state of crisis as the entire nation. It looks like I have little chance of fair treatment by the Ukrainian legal system," he told reporters.

"I have to see this through to the end, because only after going through all Ukrainian legal institutions will I have the legal right to apply to the European Court," he added.

"People from the Ukrainian security services, who have handled my case, seem to want the case to go to Strasbourg - probably because only then they, normally banned from traveling abroad, will have a right to do so," Zatulin said.

Zatulin was again banned from entering Ukraine Monday when he attempted to attend a Kiev court hearing of the entry denial case opened earlier against him.

The incident with Zatulin is taking place against a backdrop of political tension in Ukraine, after an order by the President Viktor Yushchenko to dissolve parliament controlled by factions loyal to his long-time rival, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, triggered a new standoff with the defiant legislature.
