St. Petersburg governor confirms attempt on her life
The media disseminated reports late Friday claiming that St. Petersburg police detained a group of five unidentified individuals who planned to assassinate Matvienko, elected governor in 2003.
"I cannot comment on this issue until the investigation into the case has been completed," Valentina Matvienko said, adding that she was aware of the assassination attempt plans.
"I feel secure, and I have enough personal security officers to protect me," the governor said.
Matvienko, 58, is considered a close supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has been criticized by opponents and public for questionable city development policies and receiving financial support from dubious sources.
