VOLGOGRAD, June 13 (RIA Novosti) - A former mayor of the southern Russian city of Volgograd was sentenced to one year in prison Wednesday, but released in the courtroom as he had already served the equivalent time in pre-trial detention.

The central district court found Ishchenko, 34, not guilty of abuse of office, but ruled to ban the former mayor from holding municipal posts for the next four years.

The charge of abuse of office followed local prosecutors' investigations, which revealed that Ishchenko had used his influence to gain privileges for a company owned by him, in renting offices and land. In addition, a search of his flat revealed 94 illegally-held rifle cartridges.

The former mayor was placed in the pre-trial detention center last May.

The defense team insisted that the charges against Ishchenko were unproven, and asked the court for his release. The defendant denied the charges.
