ST. PETERSBURG, July 6 (RIA Novosti) - A miner injured in a coal pit explosion in northern Russia June 25 has died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 11, the Vorkutaugol company operating the mine said Friday.

"Miner Yury Kulikovsky, who was badly injured by the accident, died in intensive care yesterday," the company press service said.

The explosion at the Komsomolskaya mine in the arctic coal-mining town of Vorkuta occurred in the evening when 277 miners were working underground.

The head of the technological watchdog said late last month that four explosions had taken place at the mine. "Four explosions occurred at the Komsomolskaya mine in quick succession, at some distance from each other," Konstantin Pulikovsky said.

Vorkutaugol said the families of those killed in the blast would be paid 1 million rubles ($38,000) in compensation.

Local prosecutors launched an investigation into the explosion, which comes in the wake of a series of tragedies at Russian mines since the beginning of the year.

Two previous explosions at the Yubileinaya and Ulyanovskaya mines in West Siberia in March and May killed 149 people.
