MOSCOW, July 31 (RIA Novosti) - Russian wholesale power generating company OGK-4 will launch Tuesday the construction of a new power unit at a plant in the Moscow Region, the company's press service said.

The project worth an estimated $570 million will add the new 400-megawatt power unit to the 1,100-megawatt plant powered by natural gas, coal and peat in Shatura, southeast of Moscow.

The Shatura plant is one of the oldest in Russia, and one of the largest in the Moscow Region.

The construction of the new unit is envisaged in the investment program developed by OGK-4, which is controlled by electricity monopoly Unified Energy System, and is one of the priority projects in Russia's power generation system.

The consortium of General Electric International Inc. (U.S.) and Gama Guk Sistemleri Muhendislik ve Taahhut A.S. (Turkey) won the main work contractor tender for the project, announced in October 2006. The new unit is to be commissioned in late 2009.

OGK-4, with total installed generation capacity of 8,630 MW, incorporates five thermal power plants - one in Western Siberia, one in the Far East, two in Central Russia, and one in the Perm Territory in the Urals.
