NAZRAN, July 31 (RIA Novosti) - One police officer was killed and three were wounded in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia when unidentified assailants opened fire on a bus they were traveling in, local police said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the local police said the assailants used Kalashnikov assault rifles, and 40 empty cartridges were later discovered at the scene of the attack.

An investigation has been launched.

The last large-scale attack took place in June 2004, when several groups of militants killed over 90 people in an attack on the 137th Border Unit base in Nazran, Karabulak, and the village of Sleptsovskaya.
