KHABAROVSK, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - A court in Russia's Far East sentenced an obstetrician to three years in prison for causing the deaths of a mother and her newborn child, the prosecutor of Amursk said Friday.

Obstetrician Sergei Bagrin treated a 29-year-old woman, who had been admitted to hospital in labor and died from trauma and severe bleeding. Her baby was alive when delivered but suffered from breathing complications and died shortly after birth.

"The court sentenced Sergei Bagrin to three years in prison, and on release he will not be permitted to practice medicine," Prosecutor Sergei Smirnov said.

Smirnov said the doctor made a serious blunder by incorrectly assessing the position of the foetus, which led to the deaths of the mother and her baby.

Smirnov said that Bagrin had pleaded not guilty and was expected to appeal the sentence. The doctor is currently on bail.
