SOCHI, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Over $7.3 billion will be needed to completely modernize the transport infrastructure of Sochi by 2014, when the Russian Black Sea resort will host the Winter Olympic Games, transport officials said.

Consultations headed by Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin are underway in the city.

The minister said Wednesday: "The 2014 Winter Olympics will sharply increase pressure on all transport infrastructure facilities - roads and parking, railways and the airport. The city's transport infrastructure does not meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee."

Sochi won its bid to host the games in early July, following in a close race with South Korea's Pyeongchang and Austria's Salzburg.

According to the Transport Ministry, infrastructure development will be funded through the 2006-2014 federal targeted program to develop Sochi, which has a $12 billion budget.

With some 1.2 million people expected to travel to the city for the 2014 games, some flights will be redirected to nearby airports in Krasnodar, Rostov, Gelendzhik and Mineralnye Vody, which will have comfortable high-speed train links to Sochi, a project that will cost around 17 billion rubles ($650 million).

The Transport Ministry suggests that over 8.5 billion rubles should be earmarked for design and construction work on Sochi's port infrastructure.

Vladimir Afanasenkov, supervising preparations for the 2014 games, said Tuesday that an additional 15 billion rubles ($580) was needed for road construction in the city.

German Gref, the minister of economic development and trade, said Tuesday that a state Olympic corporation would be set up to build sports facilities and infrastructure in Sochi. The corporation will be formed in November-December this year and a new law, to be prepared by September, will regulate its activities.

Russia will be hosting the Winter Olympics for the first time. In 1980 Moscow hosted the Summer Olympics, but the event was marred when over 60 countries boycotted the Olympics over the war in Afghanistan.
