Newborn Russian 'tourist' baby to remain in Turkey until October

MOSCOW, September 13 (RIA Novosti) - A baby born to Russian parents in Turkey during their holiday in the country is to stay in a Turkish clinic until the start of October, doctors said on Thursday.

"A decision was taken not to move the child at the moment. He is in a modern, private clinic, and there is no reason to subject him to additional stress," said Oleg Ionov, a doctor at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

"The baby's condition is stable, but he has some breathing problems," added Ionov.

The mother, Yulia Korsakova, had traveled to the Mediterranean resort of Antalya with her husband, Aleksei Maryanin, while seven months pregnant despite doctors' warnings against the trip. After the child's birth in Turkey, the couple were presented with a medical bill, but did not have sufficient funds to cover it.

The Russian vice-consul in Antalya, Sergei Koritsky, said earlier: "The management of the Anadolu clinic agreed with our proposal on resolving the problem. The clinic will discharge the child from the hospital without further hindrance."

Korsakova gave birth prematurely, a few days after arriving at her hotel in Turkey. The child weighed just 1 kilogram (2 pounds 3 ounces) at birth.

The parents had been informed by their Russian insurer, Rosno, that the birth was not covered by their insurance policy.
