NOVOSIBIRSK, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - The Central District Court in Chita, eastern Siberia, has sentenced a Chinese national to 9 years behind bars for extortion, an aide to the local prosecutor said Tuesday.
The court found the man, who illegally entered Russia in 2004, guilty of 11 crimes - two cases of robbery, four of extortion and five of fraud. His accomplice has been put on a federal wanted list.
"They specialized in extortion, including using force against Chinese and Korean nationals, involved in business and construction in the Chita Region," Anatoly Uskov said.
Alleging they were working for law-enforcement bodies, the two men extorted money, broke into the homes of Chinese and Koreans and attacked them, the 11 victim's losses amounted to some 800,000 rubles ($31,550).
