Three militants arrested in Grozny

GROZNY, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - Police have detained three members of an illegal armed group in Grozny, the capital of Russia's unsettled North Caucasus Chechen republic, a local police source said.

"Five grenades were confiscated from the detained militants," he added.

One of the detained was identified as a member of an armed group headed by Doku Umarov, a militant said to be responsible for the 2003 murder of the head of the council of elders' in the village of Vashindaroi in the Shatoi District.

In June 2003, a group of militants burst into the elder's house, dragged him out in the street and shot him. Three police officers making their way to the scene were ambushed and also murdered by the group.

The republic, which sought independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has seen two devastating wars with federal troops in recent years.

Despite assurances by local and central authorities that the situation in Chechnya is under control, clashes between law-enforcement bodies and militants are routine, with violence frequently spilling over to the neighboring republics of Ingushetia and Daghestan.

On Wednesday, unidentified assailants attacked an off-road vehicle in the republic's Vedeno district, injuring a police officer and two local residents.
