MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Moscow City Court remanded in custody on Wednesday Shamil Burayev, a suspect in the murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

The journalist, who gained international recognition for her outspoken criticism of the Kremlin and claims of state-backed atrocities against civilians in Chechnya, was gunned down in the entryway of her Moscow apartment building in October 2006.

The court turned down an appeal from Burayev's lawyers, who said their client's arrest was illegal.

The prosecution accuses Burayev of obtaining Politkovskaya's address from Lieutenant Colonel Pavel Ryaguzov, another suspect in the murder case, and passing it on to the killers.

Last week Moscow's Basmanny Court extended custody for Dzhabrail Makhmudov, another suspect in the murder.

Makhmudov, 25, who was taken into custody on August 17, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors say nine people are currently facing charges in connection with Politkovskaya's murder, including Makhmudov's two brothers.
