Putin to appear in United Russia election TV campaign
Putin announced during the pro-presidential party's October 1-2 congress that he would head the United Russia list, fueling speculation that he would become Russia's prime minister after his second, and final, presidential term expires.
"The leader of the [party's] list will also be one of the main faces of our [campaign] televised broadcasts," Andrei Vorobyov said.
The ruling Russian party also announced Tuesday that it would be the only party out of 11 running for the seats refusing to take part in live televised debates before the elections.
"We won't be debating. We believe that the time should be used to outline our policies - 'Putin's plan'," Vorobyov said.
The Central Election Committee held a draw Tuesday to select free TV slots for political debates among the parties running in the election.
Putin's decision to top the party's list has widely been seen as a bid to hang onto power after his second term expires. Analysts have speculated that Putin would seek to strengthen the prime minister role, weakening the presidential powers.
However, speaking after the EU-Russia summit last week, Putin denied that he had any such plans. "If anyone thinks I am planning to make a move to the government and transfer fundamental powers there, this is not so. Russian presidential powers will not be reduced, as long as this is down to me," Putin said.
