Russian Ford plant restarts limited production as union holds out

ST. PETERSBURG, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - A Ford car plant near St. Petersburg partially resumed production on Wednesday, despite the refusal of the plant's trade union to call off its strike, a Ford PR manager said.

"The production line was put into operation," Yekaterina Kulinenko said.

Although the trade union attempted to picket the plant, workers opposed to the strike managed to enter the building.

On November 20, some 1,000 of the factory's 2,200 workers stopped the Ford Focus production line, which has a daily output of 300 cars, until their demands for higher wages from March 2008 were met.

When the amount of workers on strike dropped to 300-400, the plant's administration decided to resume limited production.

In early fall, the Ford workers demanded a substantial pay rise from the company management.

After the talks failed, the union held a strike on November 7, but this was subsequently halted by a court ruling.
