NOVOSIBIRSK, December 19 (RIA Novosti) - The head of a maternity ward in Novosibirsk, west Siberia, is facing negligence charges over the deaths of three babies within a week.
The three children died at the same hospital in April 2005, and prosecutors accuse the head of the maternity ward, Tatyana Markova, of violating sanitary rules. A medical commission stated that the infants' deaths had been caused by a violation of "basic hygiene norms".
The hospital was quarantined soon after the incident.
Markova denies the charges, saying that the babies died after being born prematurely.
