MOSCOW, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer and a suspected militant were killed in a shootout in the early hours of Wednesday in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Karachai-Circassia, a source in the local police said.
The source said two police officers had asked a man, identified only as Tigov, to show his documents, but the suspected militant took out a machine gun and opened fire.
The police officers subsequently returned fire and wounded their assailant, but Tigov then threw a grenade at the officers.
"One police officer was killed by the explosion and Tigov died on his way to hospital," the source said.
