ULYANOVSK, January 17 (RIA Novosti) - A woman in the city of Ulyanovsk, in Russia's Volga area, has given birth to her first child at the age of 56, local doctors said on Thursday.
The 49 cm boy (19 inches), who is reportedly doing well, was born weighing 2.6 kg (5 lb), a doctor at the maternity ward where the woman gave birth said.
"This is the first time I have delivered a baby for a mother of this age," Lilya Shabayeva said, adding that it was "not rare now" for women aged 40-45 to give birth for the first time.
The mother, Raisa Akhmadiebaya, had already raised three children from her husband's first marriage, and had given up hope of giving birth to her own child.
The world's oldest mother is Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, from Spain, who gave birth to twins at the age of 66 in 2006.
