MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to discuss bilateral trade and a settlement to the Transdnestr issue.

"One of the priority issues will be discussing the dynamic development in trade and economic cooperation," a Kremlin source said.

Russia, which previously imported 80% of all wine produced in Moldova, imposed an embargo on Moldovan imports in March, 2006. The ban dealt a severe blow to the small, impoverished ex-Soviet nation's economy, bringing many winemaking enterprises close to bankruptcy.

Last year, Russia resumed imports of Moldovan wine, meat, as well as apples, grapes, tobacco, and sunflower seeds, earlier suspended over what Moscow called "quality problems."

In January-November 2007 Russian-Moldovan trade grew 40% year on year, reaching a total of $1.2 billion.

The talks will also focus on Transdnestr, a breakaway republic in Moldova with an ethnic Russian majority, which has been another irritant in relations between the two countries.

"The Russian side intends to provide active assistance for international efforts, aimed at reaching a comprehensive and final settlement of the Transdnestr problem through diplomatic negotiations," the source said.

In October, Voronin said that though the main issue of Transdnestr's status has not been settled the situation in the breakaway republic has stabilized in the past year, mainly due to active Russian-Moldovan dialogue.

Transdnestr proclaimed its independence from Moldova following a bloody war in the early 1990s. Russia has deployed peacekeepers in the area since July 1992, and the negotiation process has been frozen since February 2006.

During the September referendum last year 98% of the population of Transdnestr voted for independence and future unification with Russia.
