MOSCOW, January 28 (RIA Novosti) - Four so called empresses and one tsar attempted to register as candidates for Russia's presidential polls due March 2, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) said.

"We received 109 applications from people who wanted to run for the presidential post, and the applications are still coming" Vladimir Churov said, although the deadline was Sunday.

The empresses demanded that they be registered at the polls and that the elections not go ahead without them the official said.

Another applicant even requested he be granted the rank of Colonel General and restore him to a position at the Interior Ministry. A current mayor, also after the presidential post, made three grammatical errors in five lines in his application.

One more self-proclaimed candidate urged election authorities to register him for the polls and advised 'to pull no tricks." He said copies of his application had been sent to the UN and NATO. The Strasbourg Court of Human Rights has even taken the appeal into consideration, Churov said.

A total of four candidates have passed the registration procedures ahead of presidential elections: First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov, the ultra nationalist Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky and Andrei Bogdanov, the leader of the tiny pro-Western Democratic Party.

Medvedev, who has been publicly backed by President Putin, is the clear front-runner.
