KHABAROVSK, February 1 (RIA Novosti) - A woman in Khabarovsk in Russia's Far East has given birth to a baby weighing 6.1 kilograms (13 pounds 6 ounces), almost twice as much as an average newborn, the hospital said.
"The baby's mother was given a Caesarian section - the child is her sixth," the hospital's chief doctor told RIA Novosti, adding that the mother and child are "feeling well."
The previous record in the region had been set by a 5.6 kg newborn.
Russia's heaviest baby on record was born in the Altai Territory in southern Siberia in September last year, and weighted 7.75 kg (17 lb) at birth.
The average weight of newborn babies is about 3.2 kg (7 lb).
