President Putin has congratulated the man he publicly-backed to succeed him as Russian leader on a firm lead in Sunday's presidential elections. 
Dmitry Medvedev has won 64.92% of the vote with 20% of ballots counted in Russia's presidential polls, according to Central Election Commission data. 
Turnout at Russia's presidential polls hit 45% as of 2 p.m. Moscow time, and could exceed 70% by the end of the vote, the Central Election Commission (CEC) secretary said on Sunday. 
Russia's top election official said turnout at Sunday's presidential election reached 16% by noon Moscow time exceeding similar figures in the December parliamentary polls and the 2004 presidential vote. 
Four police officers and a civilian were injured in an attack on a police car in Khasavyurt in Daghestan, the southern Russian republic's emergencies official said on Sunday.
