NEW YORK, March 6 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's envoy to the United Nations, Viltaly Churkin, will meet on Thursday with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic to discuss Kosovo's independence, the Russian mission to the UN said.

The mission's the press secretary Maria Zakharova said Jeremic, who traveled on Wednesday to New York to urge the UN to convene a special meeting on the continuation of talks on Kosovo's status, personally requested a meeting with the Russian diplomat, counting on Russia's support on the issue.

"We still do not have any specific information regarding Serbia's intention to raise the possibility of a new round of talks on Kosovo's status," she said. "However, a meeting between Viltaly Churkin and Vuk Jeremic may result in new developments in the situation."

Churkin said on Wednesday during a news conference dedicated to Russia's rotating presidency in the United Nations Security Council that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was expected to deliver a report on Kosovo's status by the end of March.

The Security Council's previous session, which was held shortly after Kosovo declared independence on February 17, ended without agreement on a resolution or a joint statement regarding the Albanian-dominated region.

Belgrade, which considers Kosovo its historical heartland, and recalled its ambassadors from countries recognizing the province's independence, has said it will never accept Kosovo's sovereignty. Russia has pledged to block any move by Kosovo to join the United Nations.

So far over 25 states, including the United States, Australia, Japan and major European countries, have formally recognized the Republic of Kosovo.

During his visit to New York, Vuk Jeremic is expected to meet with representatives of the countries refusing to recognize Kosovo - China, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
