MOSCOW, March 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russia expects the Greek and Turkish Cypriots to restart peace talks under the aegis of the UN, the Foreign Ministry's official spokesman said on Monday.

Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed last Friday to resume peace talks to reunify the divided island, opening the way for a Turkish bid to join the European Union.

Welcoming the meeting, Mikhail Kamynin said, "We expect it to become a step toward finding a just solution to the Cyprus problem in the interests of the country's Greek and Turkish communities."

The peace talks between the two sides have been effectively frozen since 2004 when the Greek Cypriots voted against a UN reunification plan.

The Greek Cypriots represent Cyprus in the European Union and can veto Turkey's entry to the bloc.

The island has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974 following a brief Greek-Cypriot coup.
