NIZHNY NOVGOROD, March 26 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 300 tons of diesel has leaked from a storage facility at a railway depot in northeast European Russia, railway authorities said on Wednesday.
"Around 300 tons of diesel leaked from a storage tank at the Lyangasovo locomotive depot in the Kirov Region," a spokesperson said.
Some of the fuel seeped through protective barriers but was contained by spill control technology. Two dams have been placed around the spill site and special traps containing filters and absorbents are being used to collect the spillage.
The spokesperson said that the bulk of the spillage had been cleared up with work still to be done to treat the soil. A river located in the vicinity is also being monitored.
A special commission has been set up to look into the cause of the spill.
