HAVANA, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Cuba need to rebuild trade ties that were severed after the fall of the Soviet Union, a Russian minister leading a delegation to Havana told the Prensa Latina news agency on Thursday.

Cuba, which enjoyed major subsidies and military aid from the Soviet Union and was heavily dependent on the markets of Kremlin allies, suffered a major economic downturn after the Soviet Union's breakup in 1991.

Transportation Minister Igor Levitin, representing Moscow at a bilateral intergovernmental commission, said Cuba still has facilities and equipment delivered during the Soviet era that are in need of repair and modernization.

"It would be better to supply Cuba with new machine-building equipment and tools, but at the moment Cuba does not have the resources to finance new deliveries," the minister said.

Russia wants make broader use of Cuba's technological potential, and in return hopes in the future to provide the country with new KamAZ trucks, lifting equipment, planes and buses, he told the agency.

The minister also said Moscow and Havana hold similar stances on key international issues.

"Our countries support each other in various spheres of political activity," he said.

Levitin is in Havana with a delegation of over 100 officials and businessmen to attend the eighth meeting of the bilateral intergovernmental commission.
