MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - British fans planning to visit Moscow for the Champions League final on May 21 will need visas, despite an earlier statement to the contrary by Moscow's mayor, Russia's Foreign Ministry said.

However, fans holding valid tickets will not be required to go through the standard process of obtaining a visa invitation.

"Visas will be issued by the Russian Embassy in London on the production of a valid passport, completed application form and a copy of the match ticket," the ministry said.

Mayor Yury Luzhkov said on Tuesday that fans would only need their passports and tickets to pass Russian border control.

Manchester United won a hard-fought match 1-0 against Barcelona in Tuesday's semifinal to set up an all-English final with either Chelsea or Liverpool.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's London club Chelsea FC will be seeking to capitalize on their slender advantage going into the second semi-final leg on Wednesday, playing host to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, taking with them a 1-1 score from the first leg.

The final will be held at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium.

Both British and Russian media have reported that Roman Abramovich has booked up hotels, nightclubs and restaurants across the Russian capital in anticipation of a big night out should Chelsea lift the trophy. The club have never made it to the final of the Champions League.
