Russia will keep its relations with Iran unchanged after Russian president-elect Dmitry Medvedev takes office, outgoing president Vladimir Putin said in a message to Iran's leader.
MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will keep its relations with Iran unchanged after Russian president-elect Dmitry Medvedev takes office, outgoing president Vladimir Putin said in a message to Iran's leader.

Russia's acting Security Council chief Valentin Sobolev said on Wednesday he had conveyed Putin's message to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a meeting in Tehran.

The message says Russia "confirms its principles in relations with Iran, and that its policy does not depend on who is in power at any moment," he said.

"Ahmadinejad welcomed this, and conveyed his regards to President Vladimir Putin and president-elect Dmitry Medvedev," Sobolev said.

A delegation of high-ranking Russian officials arrived in Tehran for consultations last Sunday. At a meeting on Wednesday, Ahmadinejad and Sobolev discussed international and regional issues, bilateral cooperation in peaceful energy use, economic contacts and the Iranian nuclear program.

The Iranian officials outlined a package of proposals relating to Tehran's initiatives on global problems, including measures to counter nuclear weapons proliferation.

Tehran also intends to submit 'multisectoral' proposals designed to solve international security issues to six countries mediating the international dispute surrounding Iran's nuclear program.

The 'Iran Six' - the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia, and Germany - have been involved in negotiations to persuade Iran to freeze uranium enrichment, which many countries fear is being used by Tehran as a cover for a nuclear weapons program.

Iran has so far defied three rounds of United Nations Security Council sanctions over its nuclear program. It insists it needs the nuclear program for electric power generation.

Medvedev will be inaugurated on May 7, leaving Putin to become prime minister.
