MOSCOW, May 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia needs to boost helicopter production to meet the demands of the police, firefighters, and the commercial market, a Russian deputy prime minister said on Thursday.

"I very much hope that Russian helicopter manufacturers, primarily Oboronprom, in cooperation with our foreign partners, will be able to boost the output of helicopters and associated equipment," Sergei Ivanov said, addressing the opening of the HeliRussia helicopter show.

Ivanov said there are currently 14 helicopters per 1 million people in Russia, compared with 56 in Canada.

About 130 leading Russian and foreign helicopter developers and manufacturers are taking part in the HeliRussia show.

Russian defense company Oboronprom said on Wednesday a total of 120 helicopters were delivered to customers in 2007, taking into accounts upgrades and modernizations, compared with 108 in 2006.

"The enterprises have a portfolio of orders until 2010," the company said.
