MOSCOW, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - Irina Khakamada, a well-known Russian opposition figure, told RIA Novosti on Monday that she had quit politics.

"My time is up. I believe that opposition politics should be carried out by the young," she said.

Khakamada, 53, said she had quit all the political organizations that she had been affiliated with and was going to busy herself with what she called "creative activity."

"I do a lot of things, I write books, give lectures," she said.

Irina Khakamada was a member of the Russian State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, from 1993 to 2003 and ran for president in 2004, when she got 3.8% of the vote.

She also founded a political movement called Our Choice, which was later incorporated into the People's Democratic Union, now headed by former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov.

Khakamada was also a leader of the Union of Right Forces, a Russian democratic opposition party which gained 32 seats in Duma during the 1999 parliamentary elections. It failed to win any seats in 2003 and 2007 elections.

Khakamada has also published a book called 'Sex in Big-time Politics' about her work in the Kremlin. The 'sex' in the title referred to gender rather than any erotic activity in the seat of Russian power.
