NAZRAN, May 29 (RIA Novosti) - Two servicemen were killed and three injured when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia on Thursday, a source in the local interior ministry said.

The attack occurred at 3.50 p.m. Moscow time (11.50 GMT) in the village of Verkhnye Achaluki, to the north of the capital Magas.

The injured soldiers were rushed to hospital. Investigators are working at the scene of the crime.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes remain common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, although the active phase of the Kremlin campaign to fight militants and terrorists in Chechnya is officially over. Violence often spills over into neighboring republics, in particular Ingushetia and Daghestan.
