NAZRAN, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - One civilian was killed and one police officer wounded when unknown gunmen opened fire on a car outside a hospital in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, local police said.
The attack took place at 11:20 p.m. Moscow time (19:30 GMT) on Sunday in the town of Malgobek. The militants shot with automatic weapons at a police car containing three officers, and fatally wounded a passerby. The man died at the crime scene.
A police source told RIA Novosti: "All police posts in the Malgobek District have been reinforced, and all suspicious vehicles are being examined."
The search for the gunmen is ongoing, and a criminal case has been launched.
Ingushetia borders on Chechnya, a republic that saw two Kremlin-led military campaigns in the 1990s-early 2000s against separatist forces. Although the active phase of the operation was completed, frequent militant attacks occur in Chechnya and neighboring republics.
