Apparent stomach infection hits 11 children in east Siberia

13:49 29/06/2008
KRASNOYARSK, June 29 (RIA Novosti) - Eleven children aged 3-6 were hospitalized with an apparent stomach infection in the East Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, a spokeswoman for the city's health department said on Sunday.

"Eleven children were hospitalized with the symptoms of yersiniosis. According to preliminary data, the infection was caused by a cabbage salad," Yulia Kryukova said.

Yersiniosis is an infection contracted through the consumption of undercooked meat, milk, water or vegetables contaminated by the bacteria. The disease, which occurs most often in young children, typically develops from four to seven days after exposure and may last up to three weeks.

This is the third instance of the disease contraction in the region in June.

A total of 46 children from the Solnechny summer camp were hospitalized on June 20 with the symptoms of yersiniosis. Their number increased to 70 on June 25.

In a separate development, a total of 21 children from the Shaktyor summer camp in the Krasnoyarsk Region were also hospitalized and diagnosed with yersiniosis.
