Chechen President Kadyrov denies assassination attempt rumors
"The rumors originate from Wahhabis or provocateurs seeking to create cheap sensations," Kadyrov said. "The situation in the Chechen Republic is currently very quiet and stable, but of course there are people very much discontented with it. Such rumors are only aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region."
The Chechen leader also vowed to eradicate Wahhabism in Chechnya. "If Wahhabism cannot be cured, it can only be eradicated, which is what we will do," he told journalists.
Wahhabism is a fundamentalist Islamic movement and the dominant faith in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Kadyrov also said Chechen militant leader Doku Umarov would face the same fate as Shamil Basayev, Chechnya's number one terrorist who was killed in July 2006.
Chechnya saw two Kremlin-led military campaigns in the 1990s and early 2000s against separatist forces. Although the active phase of the operation has been completed, frequent attacks by militants still occur in Chechnya and neighboring republics.
