The event was organized by pro-Kremlin youth organizations.
Students from South Ossetia who witnessed the Georgian assault on Tskhinvali on August 8 also took part in the rally.
According to Russian figures, around 1,600 civilians were killed and over 34,000 fled the region following Georgia's attack on the capital of the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia. A total of 528 refugees from the republic have received medical assistance in the neighboring Russian republic of North Ossetia since August 8.
"Russia has been the guarantor of peace in the Caucasus for more than 100 years, and when a lunatic waged war, Russia stopped it," said the leader of the Nashi youth movement, Nikita Borovikov.
A survey conducted in mid-August said the majority of Russians (80%) believe the breakaway republic of South Ossetia will never be a part of Georgia again, while 39% say they are ready to see it become a part of Russia.
