Russia will formally establish diplomatic relations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will formally establish diplomatic relations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"On September 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold negotiations with the foreign ministers of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Murat Dzhioyev and Sergei Shamba. They will exchange notes on the establishment of diplomatic relations," the ministry said.

The diplomats will also discuss draft agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual aid between Russia and each of the two republics.

Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia on August 26, two weeks after it had concluded its operation "to force Georgia to peace," saying the move was needed to protect the regions following Georgia's August 8 offensive against South Ossetia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that Moscow will not go back on its decision to recognize the regions.

"We made this choice ourselves. It is final and irreversible," he said.

However, he said international discussions on the republics' status would go ahead, as stipulated in a peace deal brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy last month.

"International discussions stipulated in point six of the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan signed on August 12, 2008, will begin on October 15, 2008, in Geneva," he said.

Medvedev said the agreement on diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia would be followed by "other agreements, under which we will provide them with economic, humanitarian and military support."
