MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States were comparable to Georgia's military action in its breakaway region of South Ossetia early last month.

"For Russia August 8, 2008 is almost like September 11 for the United States," he said at a meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Almost 3,000 people died on September 11, 2001, when terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City, a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon in Washington.

Russia recognized the independence of Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on August 26, two weeks after it expelled Georgian troops from the region following Tbilisi's military offensive against South Ossetia.
