Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has terminated the activities of 120 terrorist and extremist organizations this year, Russia's president said on Tuesday.
MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has terminated the activities of 120 terrorist and extremist organizations this year, Russia's president said on Tuesday.

"The struggle against armed gangs that are seeking to destabilize the situation in the country, and especially in the North Caucasus, remains a focus of the security forces," Dmitry Medvedev said.

"This year, the FSB has terminated the activities of 120 terrorist and extremist organizations," he added.

Medvedev also said maintaining security at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, to be held in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi, would be a "joint task for the FSB and law enforcement agencies."

The Russian president urged the use of up-to-date technology and cooperation with the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Collective Security Treaty Organization in the fight against terrorism.

In the first half of 2008, Russia's Federal Security Service and Interior Ministry prevented seven terrorist attacks and more than 30 terrorism-related crimes in southern Russia, the FSB director Alexander Bortnikov announced in July.

During the first five months of 2008, the Russian North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia in particular saw a sharp increase in assaults on law enforcement and military personnel. In 53 attacks, a total of 12 police officers and four servicemen were killed, and 46 law enforcement officers and 11 soldiers injured in the republic.
