"Kornishin is accused of embezzling through fraudulent action and abuse of office funds and a two-room apartment worth a total of more than 5 million rubles ($194,000)," Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.
Markin said a probe on large-scale fraud against the general was launched in April, and a decision on his arrest was made due to the suspect attempting to influence witnesses.
"Investigators have incontestable evidence that when at large the suspect pressured witnesses, forcing them to give testimony in his favor," Markin said.
Kornishin, 55, is also accused of illegally purchasing and storing ammunition, Markin said, adding that investigators were continuing to look into other charges against the general.
Popular Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda earlier reported, citing Investigation Committee sources, that Kornishin's actions had cost the state some 27 million rubles (over $1 million) and he appeared to be the owner of 14 apartments in Moscow and two luxury homes outside the capital.
