MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Photos taken by RIA Novosti photojournalists during the five-day conflict between Georgia and its breakaway South Ossetia are to go on display at an exhibition in Moscow.

Tbilisi launched a military attack against South Ossetia on August 8 to try to regain control over the separatist republic, prompting Russia to send troops into the region in response. Around 1,600 South Ossetians were reported killed in the fighting and thousands more were forced to flee the region.

The exhibition entitled Nature Habitat will open on October 29 in Russia's Contemporary History Museum in Moscow and will last until November 9.

Anastasia Davydova, the director of the project department at the Russian News and Information Agency, said the reporters were working in combat zones from the beginning of Georgia's attack, and took unique pictures of the war.

"Under the hail of bullets and shell bursts, they [reporters] took pictures of the bombing and tank attacks, destroyed homes and cramped shelters where people were trying to take cover," Davydova said.

"Each picture is undisputable documentary evidence of the tragedy. This exhibition represents the most expressive photos," she added.
