VLADIVOSTOK, November 9 (RIA Novosti) - North Korean border guards detained a Russian ship in the Sea of Japan with 14 crewmembers on its board, the Russian Far Eastern regional rescue and coordination centre said on Sunday.

The Stepan Demeshev ship was detained on Sunday while sailing from Russia's Pacific Coast to the South Korean port of Pusan for bottom dredging work. All the crewmembers are Russian nationals, the center said.

The ship was escorted to the North Korean port of Chongjin for investigation. The Russian Foreign Ministry has been informed about the incident, the center said.

According to the center, the ship's right-side engine failed during a storm in the Sea of Japan and the captain ordered to drop the anchor and start repairs, without notifying North Korean border guards.
