"We have no plans for any kind of invasion of Georgia and never had. Media reports claiming that Russia is planning military action for next spring have no basis," Gen. Nikolai Makarov told a meeting of foreign military attaches in Moscow.
"It is a fact however that Georgia is continuing to escalate the situation," he added.
Russia and Georgia fought a five-day war in August after Georgian forces attacked breakaway South Ossetia in a bid to bring it under central control. Moscow later recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another pro-Russian breakaway Georgian province, as independent states.
The general also said countries such as Georgia should have no military support from the international community. Russia has accused Ukraine of supplying arms to Georgia during the conflict - charges that Kiev has dismissed as groundless. Ukraine has also argued that Georgia has never been placed under any sanctions or arms embargo by the UN Security Council, the OSCE, the EU, or other international organizations.
Gen. Makarov was meeting with foreign military attaches accredited in Russia at the Military Academy of the General Staff to brief them on priority areas of military reform in Russia as well as on the international aspects of the Defense Ministry's activity, a ministry spokesman said.
