MOSCOW, January 30 (RIA Novosti) - Police in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan have detained a suspected militant and seized ammunition and five kilograms of explosives, a police source said on Friday.

The suspect was one of two men who had been stopped for a routine ID check while driving a Zhiguli sedan in the town of Khasavyurt. The detainee was also carrying a hand grenade and a clip for a handgun at the time of the arrest.

The second man escaped in the car, which was later found several blocks from the scene.

"The search of the car revealed a grenade launcher round, over 150 rounds of ammunition, three mobile radio devices, two notebooks with instructions on how to make explosive devices, and five kilograms of explosives," the source said.

Daghestan and Ingushetia, which both border Chechnya, are experiencing a sharp increase in attacks on law enforcement and military personnel.
