MOSCOW, March 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that women should be encouraged to take key government positions in the country.

"I talked to my colleagues in the Spanish government yesterday, and they reproached me as Russian president for employing too few women in government," Medvedev said. "There was nothing I could tell them."

Speaking ahead of International Women's Day, originally a day for the celebration of women's economic and political liberties, Medvedev appealed to the administration and the government to encourage women to join their ranks.

There are two women in the current Russian Cabinet - Economics Minister Elvira Nabiullina, 43, and Health and Social Development Minister Tatyana Golikova, 41. The proportion is much lower than in most European governments.
