MOSCOW, March 11 (RIA Novosti) - Special forces in south Russia killed 243 militants including 23 gang leaders in 2008, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday.

"While putting up armed resistance, 243 militants including 23 gang leaders were fatally wounded," the FSB press center said in its report on the activities of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee in 2008.

The report said that 576 more militants were detained during the year, and that special forces found 640 arms caches and militant bases, containing 1,407 fire arms, 2,401 kg (5,300 lbs) of explosives, and 454 self-made explosive devices.

Special forces also prevented 104 planned terrorist attacks in Russia in 2008, including in the southern resort cities of Anapa and Sochi, which will host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

"In particular, attempts made by gang leader Doku Umarov and al-Qaeda emissary Mohanned to stage terrorist attacks with powerful self-made explosive devices were averted in July and August in the resort cities of Sochi and Anapa," the FSB said.
